He was the first fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon to practice in Georgia. He started his own practice on the campus of Saint Joseph’s Hospital in 1983 and this practice has evolved into Perimeter Orthopaedics. Over his career, he has gained a wealth of experience treating foot and ankle conditions ranging from relatively minor to extremely complex.
Each patient will receive Dr. Spiegl’s hands-on approach to his or her problem. Many diagnoses can be made by a thorough history and physical examination. Others require carefully thought out laboratory testing and/or imaging. Each person is treated with a multifaceted approach including medical management, physical therapy, orthobiologics, shockwave therapy, and functional medicine as well as both time tested and innovative surgical techniques.
Dr. Spiegl attended college at the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in physics and graduated with honors. He was awarded a National Science Foundation Traineeship and went on to study at Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts. He earned a Master of Science Degree in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He also earned a Master of Degree in bioengineering during medical school.
After medical school, Dr. Spiegl completed his internship at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He did his Orthopaedic residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. He is board certified, has recertified three times, and is on track to recertify again in 2026.
Dr. Spiegl is highly respected in his field, having published numerous papers and serving as a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and in the orthopaedic foot clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital, also in Atlanta. He’s a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, and the Georgia Orthopaedic Society.
