Foot Pain Q&A

What causes foot pain?

The expert team at Perimeter Orthopaedics, PC diagnoses and treats many problems that cause foot pain, including:

  • Flatfoot
  • Arthritis of the foot
  • Bunions
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Corns and calluses
  • Diabetic foot problems
  • Foot and toe fractures
  • Heel pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Hammertoe
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Toenail fungus
  • Sesamoiditis

These conditions may result from sports injuries, repetitive stress, or inherited issues in the structure of your foot. Wearing poorly fitting shoes may exacerbate these problems and cause symptoms to develop more rapidly.

What tests and procedures diagnose foot pain?

First, your Perimeter Orthopaedics, PC specialist asks you to describe your foot pain, including when it started and what other symptoms accompany it. They review your medical history and perform a physical exam. During the exam, your provider may observe your feet as you walk or stand.

Depending on your needs, they may also take on-site imaging tests, such as:

  • X-ray
  • Weight-bearing computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

These tests help your provider diagnose the cause of your foot pain so they can recommend the best approach to treatment.

What nonsurgical treatments are available for foot pain?

After they diagnose the cause of your foot pain, the team at Perimeter Orthopaedics, PC creates an individualized treatment plan. Depending on the type and severity of your foot problem, treatment may include:

  • Icing the foot
  • Activity modification
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching exercises
  • Compression therapy
  • Immobilization in a brace or walking boot
  • Custom orthotics
  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy
  • Oral or topical antifungal medications
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications

Perimeter Orthopaedics, PC also offers regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell injections.

When would I need surgery for foot pain?

If you continue to experience foot pain, or if your condition is severe, the team at Perimeter Orthopaedics, PC may recommend surgery. Dr. Spiegl is an experienced foot and ankle surgeon who performs a variety of procedures, including:

  • Flatfoot correction
  • Bunion surgery
  • Heel surgery
